EC Woodard

Emily Carew Woodard was born and raised in lovely Cornwall. She came to London to study illustration at the London College of Communications, where she graduated in 2008. She is currently living in North London and working as a freelance illustrator from her studio near London Fields. Her list of clients is long and illustrious and includes The Times, McGraw Publishers and McQ for Alexander McQueen.

Woodard chooses to use muted tones, inks and gilding in her work, which is heavily inspired by 19th Century illustration. Usually working on aged or antique paper, she hopes to evoke a sense of the past. Her work often contrasts anthropomorphic characters with inanimate household objects: "I like to add a sense of humour and narrative to my compositions by mixing oddly dressed animals and teaming them up with mundane objects. I enjoy the element of juxtaposition that my drawings encompass".
